The solemn Tempyo Procession offers a recreation of the Nara period, bringing the past to life. The Emperor and Empress, the symbols of the time, walk in the procession together with guards, soldiers, Gagaku (Japanese court music) troupes, male aristocrats, and court ladies.
The event is held to allow a broader audience to experience the culture of the Nara period—a time that laid the foundation of the Japanese state and witnessed the flourishing of Japanese culture.
